Research Highlights Effectiveness of Electric Toothbrushes

I am a big fan of electric toothbrushes so I was delighted that, according to the findings of a major new study, they are proven to clean teeth and gums far more effectively than traditional manual toothbrushes.

Scientists found that use of electric toothbrushes resulted in 22% less gum recession and 18% less tooth decay over an 11-year period. They also found that people who used electric toothbrushes kept their teeth for longer, compared with those who just use a manual toothbrush.

The research provides the strongest and clearest evidence yet of the effectiveness of electric over manual brushing – something health experts have been saying for many years.

Advancements in the design and technology of electric toothbrushes have resulted in speeds of more than 8000 rotations a minute and heads that rotate in both directions. Leading brands now claim to remove 100% more plaque than manual toothbrushes to keep tooth decay and gum disease at bay.

Not all electric toothbrushes are the same and offer a variety of different benefits and features. Built in timers are a common and really useful function to ensure that you and your family brush for the recommended 2 minutes. We recommend and stock Oral B Professional Care 2000 or above as the combined pulsing and oscillating makes them some of the most effective.

With rechargeable mains brushes available from around £20 electric toothbrushes don’t need to be an expensive investment and are shown to improve oral health.
